FROM PORTLAND, MAINE TO PORTLAND, OREGON.
by SCOTT PATT
GRASS HUT
5th and Couch, #101 (inside the goldsmith building)
Portland, Oregon
Opening Reception (first Thursday): Thursday, June 2nd, 2011: 6-9pm
Please join Scott Patt for an exhibition of new works based on his successful 2010 Portland, Maine exhibition “Good Luck”. <http://www.scottpatt.com/good%20luck.html>
Luck has long been used to justify fortunes both good and bad, explain the unexplainable, accept that which is unchangeable and rationalize what is deserved. “GOOD LUCK. again.” reflects on 40 years of fortune & Scott’s early years in Pennsylvania culminating in a succinctly modern & sharp personal symbology.
Traditional Pennsylvania German Hex signs (commonly displayed to bring Good Luck and ward off evil) are hybridized with Scott’s admiration of surfing, surf culture and the Eastern & Western shores of the U.S. As well, common items from his Pennsylvania youth like cutting boards and paddles have been reappropriated as canvases carrying tidings of good luck juxtaposed with religious, sexual and politically loaded imagery. Scott further explores the connotations of luck and it’s relationship to fate and sacrifice through his “Rabbit With foot” sculpture series.
